  • Ocular Herpes Treatment

Ocular herpes is also known as herpes of the eye.  This infection is caused by the herpes simplex virus, the same virus which causes genital herpes and cold sores.  How do we know that we have the infection and what available ocular herpes treatment is available?

Ocular herpes virus is a recurrent viral infection that affects the eye.  It is primarily characterized by an inflammation of the cornea which can cause irritation in the eyes at the least and sudden and severe pain in the eye at the most.   Other symptoms of ocular herpes include swelling around the eyes, tearing, eye sores, watery discharge from the eyes, sensitivity to light, eye redness, and the sensation that there is a foreign body in the eye.

Ocular herpes happens when the virus that causes genital and oral herpes comes into contact with the eye.  The person who has ocular herpes may have come into skin to skin contact with the open sores of a genital or oral herpes outbreak.  The virus enters the body through the nose or the mouth and travels into the nerves where it may lay dormant for some time before an outbreak occurs.  Medical practitioners are still unsure about what causes a herpes outbreak but some circumstances such as stress, over exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun, and certain types of trauma have been shown to trigger such outbreaks.

There is no cure for ocular herpes and other treatments for herpes are aimed at reducing the severity of pain felt during outbreaks, the prevention of complications and suppressing the number of recurrences an infected person may experience. Ocular herpes treatment depends on where in the eye the infection is located.  If the corneal infection is only superficial, antiviral eye drops or ointments may be prescribed to alleviate the symptoms.  Steroid drops on the other hand are prescribed to decrease inflammation and prevent corneal scarring when the infection reaches into the deeper layers of the cornea.  Your eye doctor may also resort to scraping the part of the cornea which is infected with the virus with a special instrument.

Surgery may be required when scarring of the cornea occurs or when the treatment does not clear the center of the cornea. Nevertheless, you can still enjoy a happy life even with herpes. Dating can be possible with precautions in mind.

  • Over Counter Herpes Treatment

There are over counter herpes treatment that is available to give relief to those who are suffering from the disease.  It should be kept in mind that these remedies cannot by themselves treat herpes or address its symptoms.  They are most effective when taken with antiviral medication prescribed by the doctor.

Often, a doctor prescribes over counter herpes treatment medication such as ibuprofen to address the pain that comes with a sores outbreak and fever to accompany the antiviral medication a patient is taking.  There are other easily available treatments we can take without having to have a prescription by the doctor.  It would be wise however to consult with him or her before you decide to try them out.

Vitamin supplements are a good place to start for your cold sores natural treatment.  When undergoing a herpes outbreak it is always advisable to keep your general immunity up.  Vitamins and a nutritious diet are good ways to do this.  Your body needs all the fuel it can get as it battles against the virus which causes herpes.  There is anecdotal evidence that Lysine can hasten healing from herpes sores and suppress outbreaks.  Likewise vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc have been shown to have a positive impact in treating herpes.

There are also balms and ointments one can put in the areas affected by herpes in order to aid the healing and drying up of herpes sores.  Aloe Vera which is available commercially as a cream or gel has been known to hasten the healing process and prevent the recurrence of outbreaks.  Lemon balm on the other hand has shown antiviral qualities and may reduce the intensity of herpes symptoms.

Antiviral medication is prescribed by doctors to not only address herpes symptoms but to prevent and suppress future outbreaks too.  It does this by interfering with the reproduction process of the herpes simplex virus.

Without antiviral medication we may suffer outbreaks more frequently.  The exact causes of an outbreak is still a mystery to medical experts.  They have however pointed to a weakened immune system and stress as some of the triggers which can rouse the virus from its dormant state to instigate another round of symptoms.  As such, adopting a healthy lifestyle---eating right, getting enough rest, and exercise---will go a long way in helping the drugs and your body suppress another herpes outbreak even without minimum herpes zoster treatment.

  • Early Stage Pictures Herpes

Pictures of herpes can be easily found on the Net. If one does look at them, even in early stage pictures, herpes can look like a very unpleasant thing to undergo.  They may be not pleasant to look at but they are very useful sources of information that can educate us about the symptoms we may be experiencing.

Genital herpes is an incurable sexually transmitted disease. It is a widespread one, too with experts estimating that between forty to fifty million Americans have been exposed to the virus and carry its antibodies.  Millions more carry the disease worldwide.  The reason behind the great number of people with herpes is that those who carry the infection often pass it on because they are not aware that they have genital herpes.

The truth is that a vast majority of those with genital herpes do not experience any of its symptoms.  They do however, remain completely capable of passing on the disease to others.  For the unfortunate few who have the symptoms, learning that they have herpes can be a difficult experience in itself.

The symptom for which genital herpes is most known is the appearance of herpes sores in the genital area and around the area of the rectum.  Before the appearance of the sores, a person with the virus may experience some symptoms that may warn him or her that he or she is about to experience an outbreak of herpes.

As can be seen in early herpes symptoms pictures, herpes sores outbreaks may start off by a reddening or a rash in the area of the genitals or the rectum. This time, one may consider a cold sores home treatment. The skin on these parts of the body may also start to become itchy and the person may also experience a prickly or burning sensation there.  The appearance of the rash may be accompanied by flu like symptoms such as muscle aches, headaches, and a general feeling of malaise.  Fever and swollen lymph nodes as well as a swelling or inflammation in the affected area may also be experienced.
These symptoms are collectively known as a prodome and can manifest between one to two weeks after one has been exposed to the virus.  Should you suspect that you have the early signs, immediately consult your physician for examination, testing and treatment for stages of herpes.

  • Herpes Home Treatment

When seeking relief from the pain and discomfort brought about by an outbreak of herpes, we should not limit ourselves to the measures prescribed by our doctors.  There are some herpes home treatment techniques that will not only make us feel more comfortable but may also speed along the recovery process.  Here are some things you can do at home to help your body and the antiviral medication you are taking fight off herpes.

Black tea contains certain natural chemicals which have anti viral and anti-inflammatory effects.  What you want to do is to prepare some black tea using a tea bag.  After the tea bag has cooled enough to allow you to put it on your skin, take the tea bag and apply it on the infected area for about five minutes.  You can do this two to three times a day and is best begun the moment any signs of a herpes sores outburst is experienced.

Another herpes home treatment technique one can do to hasten the healing of open sores, especially in oral herpes, is to use honey.  Honey does have antibacterial and antiviral qualities which can help disinfect herpes sores and prevent its spreading to other persons or other parts of the body.  Apply honey over the affected area of the body several times daily.

Cornstarch or baking soda can also greatly aid in alleviating any itchiness a person experiences during an outbreak of herpes simplex sores.  Baking soda and cornstarch will not only relieve itching but will help keep the sores dry---which is essential to hastening their healing.  When using cornstarch, simply apply it on the infected area and leave it to dry out the sores.  For baking soda, moisten a cotton ball and coat it with baking soda.

Apply the cotton ball coated with baking soda to the affected area.  Once you have used the cotton ball on the sores, dispose of it properly.  Do not re-dip the cotton ball in the baking soda as this may contaminate the baking soda.

Applying ice to the affected part of the body can also help soothe the area as well as inhibit the activity and prevent it from spreading.  Wrap the ice in a towel or clothe and apply it directly on the affected area.

The best treatment for herpes is availble. You can try to help make your recovery from a herpes outbreak faster and a little less unpleasant.

  • Treatment for Herpes Zoster

We may have heard about genital or oral herpes.  We may however, not have heard about herpes zoster.  Just what is it and what is the treatment for Herpes zoster?

Herpes zoster is also known as shingles.  It is a contagious disease caused by the varicella zoster virus---the same microorganism that causes chicken pox.  We may have had chicken pox during our childhood and once undergone, it is commonly believed that we have had our first and last encounter with the virus.  What is not known by many is that after the chicken pox has resolved itself, the virus which causes it stays in the body and may come out in later life as shingles.  Take note that the virus which causes herpes zoster is different from the virus which causes oral or genital herpes which is known as the herpes simplex virus.

Herpes zoster is characterized by the appearance of a rash which is similar in appearance to hives.  This rash is usually in the form of a stripe and often appears on only one side of the torso.  The rash however has also been known to appear on the face, eyes or other parts of the body.  The rash is often preceded by sensations of burning pain, itching, and pricking in the affected areas of the skin.  The sensations felt may be extremely painful or can be punctuated by quick stabs of intense pain.  Other symptoms include fever, headache, and malaise.

The rash eventually develops into small painful blisters which crust and fall away within seven to ten days.  Some scarring may occur after if the blistering is severe and there are cases of residual pain which can last from a few months to several years.  This condition is called postherpetic neuralgia.

There is no cure for the disease and the rash usually disappears on its own even without herpes treatment. Thus treatment for herpes zoster  is aimed at limiting the severity and duration of pain, shorten the period of the appearance of shingles and prevent complications which can arise.  Antivirals which inhibit the replication of the varicella zoster virus may be prescribed by your doctor as well over the counter analgesics to address the pain and fever.  Calamine lotions can also help soothe the discomfort brought about by the rash.

Should you think you have shingles, immediately consult your medical practitioner for a new herpes treatment
